Yi Home Camera 2 Review

Yi Home Camera 2 ReviewYi Home Camera 2 is manufactured by Yi Technology. This IP camera is the latest addition to their Home security camera line-up. Yi home camera 2 is to be released on April 15, 2016 according to Amazon, on their website. At first glance, we can see how well this IP camera has been crafted. Its design is quite beautiful, and can be classified among the few Home IP cameras on the market with such design. One of the main features of this camera is its, advance night vision with no light pollution which comes from 940nm IR LED’s and has 11 such IR beads. Light pollution in simple terms is the loss of picture detail due to additional light in an image or video.

Despite of its small design, it packs great performance thanks to its ARM Cortex A9 CPU. The camera inside is an advance Ambarella S2LM and in combination with the Ambarella’s SmartAVCTM technology (low bit rate compression technology), the video is compressed using H.264 compression without any loss in quality. The advantage is a reduction up to 40% in video size and no video quality loss.

Enhanced Security & No Subscription Fees

Yi home camera 2 uses 2048-bit RSA private key for key exchange with the Yi Cloud service, and the connection is encrypted with AES-128.

With the advance technology it utilises to compress the video and encrypt it, this wireless IP camera is one of the best IP cameras which is both secure and super fast. You can use this service with zero subscription fee which is a great added bonus.

Perfect Size

The size of this camera is very practical, with just 29 mm in thickness and 59 mm inYi Home Camera 2 Review size width, it is one of the sleekest IP cameras.

There is no pan / tilt operation in this model so you cannot rotate it either horizontally or vertically but Yi home camera 2 compensates this with a wide angle camera lens which has a 130° viewing angle.

Whenever the baby cries, you get a baby alert on your connected device. I feel that this is one of the best features of the camera. It’s a very important addition for those with infants at home as you are alerted wherever you are and also get an optional video footage of the baby. The technology uses an advance voice detection algorithm which scans about 5 meters of its surrounding area.

Gesture detection is an interactive feature using which you can issue commands to the camera. For example, when you raise an arm with palm fully opened and then close your fist, the camera recognises this gesture and starts video recording.

Yi home camera 2 has 11 pieces of 940nm infrared LED beads to provide crystal clear night vision without any light pollution. This feature will increase the night vision quality dramatically.

This is a feature utilising a complex algorithm which detects human movements and sends alert to the owner along with a few high definition still images. It can filter out non-human objects and activities therefore reducing false alerts.

The camera features a 360° noise-cancelling hypersensitive microphone and speaker to communicate both ways. It has an advance compression algorithms which produces better sound quality and eliminates excess environmental noise.

CONCLUSION – Yi Home Camera 2 Review

A must have home IP camera, especially for parents with infants at home. Baby cry detector and human detection are two strong features which I love.

No more annoying lag, a powerful CPU and advance compression technology gives this camera full marks for performance. You don’t have to worry about memory, as it comes with a 32GB memory card and of course the ability to store in cloud storage.

I hope you enjoyed this Yi home camera 2 review.

  1. I am always reading your reviews about these type of cameras. Which one will you recommend for a small business? My friends owns a small candy shop and she works in the back and wants to know what is going on at the front of the store. Will this type of camera work for that? Thank you for sharing.

    • Thanks for the support. Each camera has its own features and advantage. I would definitely recommend you buy an IP camera. I have few reviews in my product reviews section, you can have a look there and decide which one would like to go with. Let me know If you have any questions, I would be glad to answer them.

      Have a nice day.

  2. Hi there ,

This camera seems to be pretty cool but I be looking for something more spy, that can be easily hidden and completely unnoticeable and no need for two way communication just one way and with some sort of way of being mains powered or very long life battery so that it can set and forget. DO you know of such hard ware?

    • Hi Derek,

I understand the type of camera you are referring to. I would suggest you visit my article here and have a look at the screw camera. It’s very small and can be easily hidden. Let me know if you need anything else.

      Have a nice day.

  3. Hi Darkblood,

I’m actually trying to find a camera for home to monitor my dogs as my work shifts are changing for the next month. This is affordable and has great features. I really like the night vision feature.

I was just wondering would I be able to access live feed through my phone? If not what would you recommend at an affordable price?

    • Hi Layne, It is a perfect camera for your situation. Yes, you can definitely see live video anywhere you like on any smartphone. It has advance features like motion sensing and night vision too. Go ahead and get one for yourself. let me know if you need any more information. Cheers.

  4. This sounds like a really great tool for any parent or even as security. It would be nice to be able to see who is at the front door before you open it. I am wondering if I am at work and my baby cries will I get that alert even though I am not in the house? Is this an as it happens recorder of does it have a memory so you can check it later. A lot of mums leave their baby’s with a carer at home and go to work and I wondered if this camera would be a benefit to them?

    • Hey Margaret,

Thanks for the comment. Yes, you are absolutely right. You will be informed of, who is at your front door if you install the camera outside and activate motion detection. You will also receive alerts on your phone with a video too, if your baby cries and yes, both the features are real time, that is, you will be alerted as soon as it happens. Mom’s with children at home, will greatly benefit from this camera as their eyes are always present inside their home.

  5. Can you recommend a good camera for locations outside the home? I enjoyed your review. Certainly something much different that the “baby cam” I’m used to when I had children. Your photos were very helpful, especially the dimensions.

It seems that cameras have changed quite a bit over the years.

    • Hey, Thanks for comment. There are many cameras on market for outdoor surveillance, but I suggest buying a camera with good “Ingress protection”, which is a rating for how weatherproof your device is. Also, investing in a wireless IP camera would remove the wire hassle. A good suggestion is Arlo smart home camera. You can get that on Amazon. A doorbell camera is another great option for outdoor protection. Check out my review on doorbell camera here. Lemme know if you have any other questions.
